The Exe Estuary Trail is a 26 mile, mainly flat cycle route and walkway which runs around the entire Exe Estuary linking Exmouth, Exeter and Dawlish. Designed by Devon County Council, it forms part of National Cycle Network 2. For dog walkers, it offers flat, easy walking with stunning estuary views, abundant birdlife, and plenty of refreshment stops.

The Exe Estuary Trail is a 26 mile, mainly flat cycle route and walkway which runs around the entire Exe Estuary linking Exmouth, Exeter and Dawlish. What to Expect

A smooth tarmac path perfect for all abilities. You'll pass through Topsham's charming streets, see wading birds on the mudflats, and enjoy views across to Powderham Castle. The trail is shared with cyclists so keep dogs close on a short lead. Dog-friendly stops in Lympstone include The Swan, The Globe, and Susanna's Tea Room.

  • ⚠Dogs banned on Exmouth beach 1st May to 30th September

Can my dog go off-lead on the Exe Estuary Trail?

No, dogs should be kept on lead throughout the trail. It's a shared path with cyclists and the Exe Estuary is an internationally important wildlife site. There are plenty of nearby parks for off-lead exercise.

Are there dog-friendly pubs on the Exe Estuary Trail?

Yes! In Lympstone alone you have The Swan, The Globe, and Susanna's Tea Room all welcoming dogs. Further along, the Turf Hotel and Double Locks are wonderfully dog-friendly.

Can I use the train with my dog on the Exe Estuary Trail?

Yes! The Avocet Line runs between Exeter, Topsham, Lympstone and Exmouth with a regular half-hourly service. Walk one way and catch the train back!
